Surveying is the profession, science and technique of determining the three-dimensional or terrestrial position of the distances and points and angles between them accurately. It is usually practiced either by the members of engineering professions or the surveyors. Usually, these points lie on Earth’s surface, and are used to establish boundaries and land maps for locations and ownership of the surface location, building corners, and for other purposes required both by commercial and private sector.
For boundary survey or land surveying Chicago or for any other plat of survey , the surveyors use elements of physics, mathematics, law and engineering. The various surveying equipment comprises- total stations, GPS receivers, robotic total stations, 3D scanners, prisms, radios, digital levels, surveying software and handheld tablets. Surveying is one of the important elements in human environment’s development since the beginning of recorded history. It’s needed in the execution and planning of almost every form of construction. The most familiar modern uses of surveying's in the sectors of building, transport, construction, mapping, communication and in defining the legal boundaries for the ownership of land.
Surveyors are responsible for determining the object’s position by measuring distances and angles, along with other factors that affect the accuracy of the observations. This information is further used to calculate various particulars of the advanced constructs such as bearings, vectors, elevations, co-ordinates, volumes, areas, maps and plans. Often, the measurements are split into vertical and horizontal components in order to simplify the calculation. The Astronomic and GPS measurements also need the figures of a time component.

I'm really interested in becoming a landscape surveyor. You talk about how engineers are usually the people who go into the profession. Is there a specific degree to go into land surveying? Also how long does it usually take to go through school for this degree? http://www.ayersconsulting.com/index.htm
